Who controls the Bitcoin software?

Is there anything comparable to a "board of directors" for Bitcoin or is the software on complete cruise-control?

This is a question that many people ask themselves when they first hear about Bitcoin. They generally want to know who is in control of the transactions on the Bitcoin network. Some people even believe that the original creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, will be able to take everyone's bitcoins at a certain point in the future. The reality of the situation is that you have nothing to worry about when it comes to who is in control of Bitcoin.

Although it is true that there are certain "gatekeepers" who are in control of Bitcoin's Github page, the fact of the matter is that no one has to accept the changes made by these so-called "core developers". Anyone can fork the Bitcoin source code at any time, which means the code is really controlled by the consensus of users more than anything else. In a rather unlikely situation where someone makes a bad change to the source code, the users of the Bitcoin protocol can simply choose to ignore it. The source code is already out there, so the idea of cryptocurrencies is definitely here to stay!
